Potala Palace

Tibet Attraction Icon
The magnificent Potala Palace, once the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, stands as Lhasa’s most iconic landmark. The sight of its towering, fortress-like walls leaves a lasting impression, captivating visitors with its grandeur. Rising 13 stories above the 130-meter-high Marpo Ri (Red Hill), the palace is an architectural marvel, containing over 1,000 rooms. Visitors, alongside devoted pilgrims, move reverently through its halls, marveling at the splendid chapels, golden stupas, and prayer rooms that make this UNESCO World Heritage site an unforgettable experience in Tibetan history and spirituality.

The Potala Palace’s origins date back to the 7th century AD, when King Songtsen Gampo established a palace on the site. However, the current structure was commissioned in 1645 by the Fifth Dalai Lama, marking a massive construction effort that required over 50 years and the dedicated work of numerous laborers and artisans. Its cultural significance was so profound that Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai ordered troops to protect it from the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

The palace layout features two distinct sections: the White Palace and the Red Palace. The White Palace, located on the rooftop and forming the eastern portion, served as the living quarters for the Dalai Lama, embodying the palace’s secular side. The Red Palace at the center, however, is dedicated to religious functions and houses the most revered chapels, including the jewel-adorned golden chörten (stupa) tombs of previous Dalai Lamas. The apartments of the 13th and 14th Dalai Lamas within the White Palace provide visitors with a more intimate glimpse into the personal aspects of palace life.

Due to high demand, tickets for Potala Palace are limited. Visitors must book time slots several days in advance, often with the assistance of a guide. It’s recommended to arrive an hour before the scheduled entry to complete a thorough security check—note that water, lighters, and certain items are prohibited. Midway up the palace steps, visitors stop at a ticket booth to finalize entry. Late arrivals or lack of required documentation can result in denied access, so punctuality is essential. Inside the chapels, photography is strictly prohibited, preserving the palace‘s sanctity and historic integrity.
