Jokhang Temple

Tibet Attraction Icon
The 1,300-year-old Jokhang Temple stands as the spiritual heart of Tibet, its timeless allure reflected in the steady stream of devoted pilgrims who prostrate themselves outside in reverence. At the core of the temple lies the central golden Buddha statue, the most venerated image in all of Tibet.

Jokhang Temple, known as Tsuk-La-Khang in Tibetan, meaning “Central Cathedral,” is the heart of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the most revered and sacred sites in Tibet. Located in Lhasa, this iconic temple was founded in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, who moved the capital of Tibet to Lhasa. The temple was originally built by Nepalese craftsmen to house a statue of the Buddha brought to Tibet by the Nepalese princess, which was later replaced by the Jowo Sakyamuni statue, brought by the Chinese Princess Wencheng. Today, this statue is the focal point of veneration at the temple.

Unlike many other Tibetan Buddhist temples, Jokhang does not belong to any one particular sect. Visitors can find representations of various masters, from Milarepa to Je Tsongkhapa, making it a central place for practitioners of all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Architecturally, the temple reflects a fascinating blend of Nepalese and Tibetan styles, with its intricate doors and pillars showcasing the influence of Nepalese craftsmanship.

A visit to Jokhang Temple is a deeply spiritual experience. Pilgrims from all over Tibet and beyond come here to perform the Nangkhor, a circumambulation around the temple that offers them a chance to connect with the temple’s sacred energy. The temple is not just a place of worship; it is a hub of Tibetan culture and spirituality. Visitors can explore its golden rooftop, where peaceful surroundings provide a unique perspective on the temple and its surroundings.

Though the temple is open to visitors, there are areas restricted to the public, such as the second floor, which is reserved for the monks’ residence. It is essential to respect these boundaries. The temple also offers a small souvenir stall run by the monks, where visitors can purchase unique Tibetan crafts.

The Jokhang Temple’s rich history, architectural beauty, and spiritual significance make it an essential destination for anyone seeking to understand the soul of Tibetan Buddhism and the culture of Tibet.
